Tuesday, June 7:         

  • Introduction to class
  • Letter of introduction; description of professional interests                                             
  • Introduction to résumé and cover letter writing in the US
  • Creation of initial website

Thursday, June 9--On-Line Meeting: 

  • DISCUSSION FORUM: Post a letter of introduction to both me and the other students, describing your background, professional interests, and hobbies
  • Respond to the other students' introductions in the discussion forum
  • Do exercises 13.6 (p. 397) and 13.7 (p. 398) in the Guffey textbook. Post your responses to the discussion forum.

Tuesday, June 14:               

  • ASSIGNMENT:
  • 1)     Find and bring 4 job ads that interest you to class
  • 2)     Guffey, Chapter 13
  • Analysis of language in job ads/audience; résumés
  • “Real” ads and their “code language”
  • Sarah Ramer, “It’s More Than the Economy, Stupid”
  • Carlos Lobo, "Résumé Reading 101"
  • Sample student work
  • create web page for application folder

Thursday, June 16--On-Line Meeting: 

  • Post a draft of both your resume and cover letter ON YOUR WEBSITE by 9 a.m.
  • Go to the other students' websites and read their drafts
  • Post your feedback comments on those drafts IN THE DISCUSSION FORUM on this site
  • Read feedback on your own drafts by the other students; work on revising your drafts
  • Post revised second drafts of your resume and cover letter ON YOUR WEBSITE by 12:45 p.m.
  • Check the discussion forum for my comments on your second drafts and begin working on final drafts

  • PORTFOLIO # 1 DUE (Job Applications)
  • ASSIGNMENT:
  • 1)     Read Guffey, Chapters 6 and 8
  • Introduction Business Letters

Thursday, June 23--On-Line Meeting: 

  • DISCUSSION FORUM: Do exercises 6.13 (p. 164), 7.9 (p. 194), and 8.16 (p.228) in the Guffey text book. POST all three practice letters on the discussion board in the forum
  • Provide feedback to/critique the other students' practice letters in the discussion forum

  • Audience and letters; good news/bad news letter  
  • Create web page for Business Correspondence Folder

  • Go to the other students' websites and read their proposals
  • Post your feedback comments on those proposals IN THE DISCUSSION FORUM on this site
  • Use the checklist in Guffey, pp. 305-306 to determine the reliability of the websites listed below. POST your findings in the discussion forum.
  • Reply to the other students' findings in the discussion forum.
