General Information

Welcome to Writing 151! This is a supplementary webpage, designed to complement our class. It will provide you with a quick overview of the course and syllabus as well as with useful links as starting points for your research paper. There is also a discussion board which allows you to "chat" with other students in an informal forum outside of class.

Course Objectives:

Writing 151 is a course designed to help you become a stronger reader and writer. In this class you will be exposed to a wide variety of literary works and be asked to analyze stories, plays, poems, and essays in class discussion, individual writing assignments and exams. You will also learn how to hone your research and documentation skills in preparation for research projects in your majors.

Required Text:

Do not buy any edition other than the one specified below!

  • Meyer, Michael (ed). The Bedford Introduction to Literature. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1999. 6th Edition.

Other Required Items

Access to a computer and the Web/email outside the classroom

Assignment Requirements

1)    An  in-depth, analytical essay on a short story/drama of your choice (3-4 pages), including a working draft and a proposal. I will NOT grade “virgin” papers; that is, papers without proposals and drafts. If you hand in a final paper without anything else, I will assume that it is a proposal or first draft. No late drafts or proposals!!!!!! I will not accept late drafts or proposals unless you have a valid excuse and notify me in advance. If you have two or more exams on the due dates, talk to me, as early as possible, about an adjusted schedule. You will have more flexibility for your final draft of the essay.

2)    An in-depth research paper (6-10 pages), including a proposal, bibliographic sketch of the topic you choose, and a working draft. Again: NO LATE DRAFT, SKETCHES, OR PROPOSALS!!!!

3)    Reaction papers. These are short (one page or less) reactions to the readings you will have to do at home. They will NOT be checked for grammar or “perfect” writing techniques. They are designed to keep you in the mode of writing and to share your views with others in the class. To that end, EMAIL YOUR REACTION to me BY 5 P.M. THE DAY BEFORE THE READINGS ARE DUE.  If you cannot email your reaction the day before the readings are due, email it two or more days beforehand. Any late reaction paper will be disregarded.

4)    Midterm and Final Essay Exams

Class Discussions

In class we will interweave discussions of texts and their techniques of writing with our own writing projects. We will also discuss each other’s writings as well as workshop our projects. Since the success of our class depends on your active participation, I expect you to take part in class discussion.

Attendance

Attendance is required, since class discussion is such an integral part of the course. More than 4 absences will result in a lowered grade, up to and including “F.” Three late arrivals to class will be considered one absence, as will three early “departures” or leaving and returning to class while it is in session. If you have to miss any class, you are responsible for all materials covered and all assignments due that day. In-class work cannot be made up.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of passing off somebody else’s work as your own, whether it is literally “stealing” somebody else’s work word-for-word or using somebody else’s ideas without acknowledging so, even if you put them in your own words. Plagiarism demonstrates contempt for ethical standards, your instructor, and your peers. Thus, if you hand in plagiarized work, you will receive zero credit for the assignment and risk failing the course.

Grading

• Final draft of short story or drama essay: 20 %
• Midterm essay exam: 15 %
• Research paper: 25 %
• Final essay exam: 20 %
• Class participation, reaction papers, bibliographic sketch, drafts, proposals: 20 %

Have fun in our class!!!!!!!
